My Criteria for Study Abroad

Writer: Jessica TannJessica Tann

Deciding what is most important for my study abroad program.

Quality Program Questions:

1. Where do I want to go? Why?

A Spanish-speaking country to develop Spanish-speaking skills.

2. What do you want or need to study?

I need to finish my Spanish minor and have a medical internship.

3. Do you need to earn credit while abroad, or would a work abroad program not for credit be possible? If you do need credit, will it transfer back to your home school and count toward your U.S. degree program?

I need Spanish credits to transfer towards my degree plan.

4. Are you fluent enough in a foreign language to take classes in it, or will it be necessary for you to take some or all of your course work in English?

I have taken a couple of Spanish classes to understand the basics and carry a conversation.

5. Do you have the appropriate pre-requisite courses to participate in, if required?

I have the appropriate Spanish 1507 and 2607 to obtain an internship abroad and finish my Spanish minor.

6. Does your GPA and class-standing fit the program requirements?

I am in good standing with the school and my GPA is above the 2.75 requirement.

7. Do you want to live in a dorm with other Americans, stay with a local family, or have some other housing option?

I would like to live with other Americans or stay in a host home.

8. Do your current scholarships need to transfer?

All of my scholarships/financial aid need to be transferable.

9. Will you need to apply for financial aid?

I will need the program to have a scholarship I am eligible for.

10. Do you want your program to include students only from your university, from other American universities, or international students from the host country?

I would like for my program to only include students from English-speaking universities.
